Poison has been used throughout history as a method of assassination, murder, suicide, and execution. Although rarely used, poison has been used as a form of execution as in the case of Greek philosopher Socrates when he was forced to commit suicide by drinking hemlock. In the use of suicide Cleopatra killed herself by inducing an Egyptian cobra to bite her. The CIA used poison several times unsuccessfully to assassinate Fidel Castro by poisoning his cigars. During the Victorian era the life insurance industry began to increase, making poisoning a fashionable crime for "loved" ones killing a life-ensured relative for profit. Poison in history also developed a reputation as a magical power. The use of belladonna was used by witches to help them fly.
